There was this split second of confusing rage when they announced the Laneway line up for Adelaide and the other capital cities

At first it looked like Feist was going to play every Laneway Festival except for Adelaide? I had a minor rage melt down.

My fury mellowed when I found out Feist hadn't left Adelaide out to dry and had instead planned a compensatory sideshow at the Thebarton Theatre next Thursday February 9th

If you're still a bit sore that Feist isn't on the Adelaide Laneway line up and that you're gonna have to shell out twice to experience both events - fear less - there's a bundled ticket where you get a combined Laneway and Feist ticket for the tidy sum of $159 - DETAILS HERE

If you still need more chilling out - well I have just read that the oh so now everyman Matt Corby will be supporting Feist at her Adelaide show. Ladies. Stop screaming. Geez.

I've been rabid for Secret Wars ever since I stumbled across the website completely by accident while shopping for sneaker related paraphenalia on the interwebs. Copped a *mad* Reebok Pump VS Secret Wars LTD EDN t-shirt for my troubles as well, thank you very much.

Secret Wars made it's way to Australia from Euro and the Americas maybe what 2 years ago now and has been gathering momentum in the Eastern state capitals (read Melbz and SYD) and it has always stressed me the fuck out living in Adelaide thinking I will never get to see this shit go live.

Well my chance finally came. I got the fuck out of Adelaide to see the Outpost exhibition @ Cockatoo Island (SYD) and copped my first Secret Wars.

Emmanuel Jal - this guy has a story - abducted from his family and forced to fight as a child soldier in the vicious civil war in his birth country of Sudan - Emmanuel Jal and fellow child soldier escapees fled their captors only to almost starve to death in the wilderness - then ending up stranded in a refugee camp, Emmanuel Jal was adopted by an aid worker and smuggled out of Sudan into Kenya.

Discovering the rejuvenating powers of music Emmanuel Jal now uses his music and celebrity profile to campaign for peace around the world

There are so many different levels/styles/grades/textures/contexts to hip hop as a musical genre. I usually steer clear of World Music hip hop as I find it's usually a little bit lame/underdeveloped/unrefined. Speaking honestly, I am not a fan Emmanuel's hip hop "sound" but I am intrigued and deeply moved by his story and his message. A true story of (life catastrophe) rags to (spiritual) riches - I think the world would do well to take a leaf out of this young man's book. Having witnessed and endured horrors many of us couldn't even imagine, Emmanuel has conquered the demons of the world around him, escaped into a world of freedom, education and performance - and not only having escaped, he is now using his gift of "new life" to campaign for a better world. Emmanuel Jal's hypnotic voice rises from hellish origins as a beacon of hope for those caught in seemingly endless cycles of war and despair.

As a child soldier of 8 years old in Sudan’s brutal civil war, Emmanuel Jal was taught to kill.

Wrong sweet hearts. Rockabilly isn't the fad or the look that you bin referring to.

Scenes will come and go. Trends and fads will ebb and flow. Bad/excessive retro tattos are gonna take some effort to hide/remove.

But beyond and underneath it all - Rockabilly is a musical movement, a genre, a culture and a life style.

Sure it's *hot* right now but when the fad kids are done playing dress up and the scene has moved on, Rockabilly will still be king - immortalised in decades of outstanding musical recordings, timeless fashion and cinema.

So long as the likes of James Dean and Elvis are cool, rockabilly will still be relevant.

The Semaphore Music Festival is probably the most holistic event for real live and local music in the Adelaide music calendar. No hype. No flair. No tweenies. No neon. It is consistently putting on a high quality showcase of talented Adelaide musicians year after year.

What beguiles me about the Semaphore Music Festival is the complete lack of promotion and fanfare surrounding it. It seems to be a bit of a speakeasy event. You know like, having the same vibe as places like the Wheatsheaf Hotel or the Semaphore Workers Club - people who really care about good beer a good pubs and good music - they know, they go, they don't really bother about spraying it on a billboard for the world to know about.

Could also be to do with the fact Semaphore is so fucking far away from everything. But it's a beautiful part of town with some great old architecture and lovely venues.

Anyway i digress. All 4 days of the Semaphore Music Festival are laden with music. And has a distinctly folk, blues and roots feeling.

Speckled with familiar names - The Yearlings, Cal William Junior, The Baker Suite, Emily Davis - any of the 4 days is a great day out.

Monday October 3rd (Labour Day Public Holiday - Fuck Yeah) has been designated the *Rockabilly Mayhem* day featuring a free daytime Rockabilly *FEST* - feat. the Baskervilles, Saturday’s Army, Dead Lucky, The Saucermen and The Silverados.

The nighttime concert will close out with a paid show by The Rustlers, Prawnhead and Adelaide darlings - The Satellites @ the Palais.

These guys are categorically insane. They pride themselves on a riotous raucous dangerous rabid perverted mentalist stage show. Often involving partial to complete nudity, property damage and crowd invasion these guys are a sight to behold (from a distance).

This is definitely a band where the live performance and the rock *show* takes precedence over the music.

Totally Unicorn are going to totally kill it at The Metro on Saturday night - supported by Nighthag, Craterface and Ante Up. Holy fuck this is going to be a fun show.

Everyone's favourite squeaky white rapper (not Eminem) - Drapht - is coming to Adelaide this Saturday September 24th

Having most recently sold out HQ (what?) Drapht has moved onwards and upwards, now having a crack at the hallowed hall of Thebarton Theatre.

Drapht will be ably supported by rappers who are better than him - Aussie hip hop standard bearers Muph & Plutonic and new beans Thundamentals.

Diggin the recent singles by Thundamentals. Good Aussie hip hop invading your sector.

Get on it. All said and done. My beef with Drapht will be set aside momentarily to say - this will be a great show.

Illy + Spit Syndicate + Sietta + M-Phazes @ The Gov @ Friday 30th September

The week following Drapht's Party Party tour, Australia's favourite *sentimental hip hop* (yuck) poster boy Illy will do the hip hop at the Governor Hindmarsh.

As bland as Illy's sound is. I do find Illy's collab with Owl Eyes really really pleasant. Totally validated and rescued by Owl Eyes beautiful vocal contribution.

Another mediocre Aussie hip hop headliner (Illy) with a full set of amazing artists in tow/support.

Taking support duties and banging you for your buck - Spit Syndicate and Sietta will be rocking out and warming the stage for Mr Illy.

Blah blah blah - Spit Syndicate - fucking brilliant. If you love Horrorshow make sure you get on to Spit Syndicate. Their live show is stellar and they sound so much better live than they do on their CDs.

The ONLY criticism I have of Spit Syndicate - all of their music videos are pretty shit. Someone help the lads out and give them a bangin' music video that's going to get them noticed please?

Case in point - this is a GREAT song (better live) but pretty drab video. Go see them live.

Sietta. Electro? Trip hop? Blowing up. Signed to Elefant Traks. They don't need me to like them. They've got a legion of fans.

The whole Illy night is being MC'ed/hosted by killer hip hop producer M-Phazes. You know the name. No doubt he will get to play out some beats to please the crowd.

I wanted to write an extended review of this amazing show but I'm scared that what I have to write won't do the job.

In short - this was an *amazing* show. This is the 3rd time I've had the privilege of seeing DJ Rob Swift. The first time - on tour with X-ecutioners circa 1999. The second time @ Producers Bar. And this time appearing @ Grass Roots @ The Old Exchange.

He absolutely killed the set. Dexterous wonderment on the turntables. I *lost my shit* when he started tricking out with the Chuck D vocal sample from "Welcome To The Terrordome".

A totally dope chill environs to catch a world class turntablism/hip hop icon. The beer garden at the Old Exchange provided the perfect Sunday evening relaxicon for this showcase event.

Helping to paint the picture - local artist Store provided the live art behind the turnies - smashing out a beautiful mural dedicated to the late DJ Roc Raida. The sentiment was not lost on DJ Rob Swift who paused to reflect on the poignancy of the timing of the set - on the eve of the anniversary of the passing of Roc Raida with whom DJ Rob Swift was close friends, in addition to playing along side him in The X-ecutioners. Rob Swift paused near the end of his set to deliver very moving and heart felt spoken word recalling his friendship with Roc Raida and asked the crowd for a "minute of noise" in lieu of a "minute of silence" to honour his friend.

(*almost* ironically - I would like to apologise to Rob Swift for the *fucking asshole scum* who mumbled drunkenly to their scum bag friends during his spoken tribute - someone should have told them to shut up but i sure as hell didn't have to guts to tell em - sadly Adelaide's drunken hip hop types are prone to macho-ism and ruckuss-ing >>> and I've already given blood for Adelaide hip hop. Funnily enough it was at the same venue 2 years ago when some fool threw a bottle at my head)

He's got a really good sound. Listening the *10* tracks posted at his myspace immediately had me thinking of old MC *Diverse*.

Lyrics are a bit glamorous. Unsure if he's being tongue in cheek or not. Hoping so. Cos I prefer my hip hop sans misogyny.

But to tell truth - cos truth matters - the recording DID NOT wrap me like i thought it was going to. Don't get me wrong - cos truth matters - it's good, it flows, it's smooth, it's oozes groove. But it fails to positively communicate their insane live energy/charisma. One of the best things i did while i was in Brisbane was to catch these guys in concert.

Busby Marou. I'm not sure if they are *HUGE* yet in QLD and/or the East Coast but i had never heard of them before last weekend. But judging by the amount of publicity and exposure they had in Brisbane i RKN we could call this one - watch these guys they are going to blow up.

Simply one of the greatest performers in Australian music ever.

Clare Bowditch - phenomenal singer songwriter. Her recordings have an air of maturity and sophistication. Her live shows on the other hand are - funny, raucous and joyfully unruly.

The first thing i noticed upon arriving at the Gov was that it was a seated show. Sigh. Shoulders slump. I hate shooting at seated shows. I always feel like a nuisance to the other concert goers standing between them and the band. And mobility is limited as i try to avoid blocking people's views resulting in limited shooting options/angles.

This was an amazing show. When asked by a friend - "name your favourite concerts of the last 12 months" - both Clare Bowditch's concerts come to mind. But my all time fav of the last year would still have to be A Tribe Called Quest @ Festival Hall @ Melbs. But this show comes a close second.

Called the "Winter Secrets" tour - it was much more a cabaret experience than a concert. Clare B joked and conversed amicably with the crowd in between (and sometimes during) songs. Telling silly stories that had the crowd laughing and cheering and jeering jovially. Her "pilgrimage to the Corona brewery in Mexico" was especially memorable.

Anyone who had a "strictly business" attitude towards Clare Bowditch's music wanting to hear rote-recitals of her back catalogue would have left disappointed. Everyone else was swept away by Clare B's enthusiasm and energy onstage.

The entire show was centred around interactivity and the show took on a new dimension when CB invited blues and roots songbird Lanie Lane onstage. They took it in turns each playing and singing their own songs while the other contributed backing instrumentation.

I was a teeny tiny bit disappointed that i wouldn't get to see an entire "Lanie Lane" set but this was more than duly compensated by watching the delightful stage chemistry the two shared on stage chattering and giggling like a couple of long time BFFs. I'm really hoping Lanie Lane comes back soon to perform a more conventional set. Lanie Lane is ridiculously sweet and seems to be slowly adjusting to her new found life in the spotlight, performing with a pleasantly shy/aloof/"kawaii" stage demeanor as she swapped and matched stories and banter with Bowditch on stage. Lane's "Q&A session" on the couch was a delight to behold as she gave shy awkward answers in her most heavenly voice in between fits of giggles.

This was a very special performance and punters had been warned and conditioned on the ticket vendors website that this would be an interactive experience. CB asked the crowd to sing simple backing harmonies while she constructed her songs over the top, smiling broadly all the while as the crowd responded kindly.

Not content with offstage crowd participation - CB asked volunteers from the audience to come up - unrehearsed & unstaged - to sing and perform along side her on backing vocals and drums. The first instance took everyone apparently by surprise, "Okay who wants to sing this song ****** with me? I'm going to count down from 5 and someone had better volunteer". Almost at the last moment a very brave young man stepped onstage to the enthusiastic applause of the audience. He sang very well. Respect. Later on she asked if anyone from the audience could hold a simple beat on the floor tom. Again, Adelaide's audience delivered. Another confident and well executed performance.

In the lead up to her Winter Secrets tour, CB had also asked fans and musicians to enter a competition - asking them to submit a cover of one of her songs and the winner would have the opportunity to perform on stage with her. CB heaped mountains of praise on the winning Adelaide duo and they made us proud. Another highlight of the night.

Another high point was when CB and LL left and returned to the stage "in costume/character" as a couple of MTV drop outs - giving a performance that had everyone in the audience thinking of Chris Lilley's "Angry Boys". The crowd exploded with glee during this session when CB started to sing through her iPhone *vocoder* app into the PA. Kanye Fucking West. It was laugh-mazing.
